In a recent interview with The Illuminerdi, Hit-Monkey star Fred Tatasciore discusses the possibility of voicing Monkey in the MCU or a second season of the adult Marvel animated series.
Daniel Way and Dalibor Talajić created the character Hit-Monkey, who first appeared in Hit-Monkey #1. The hero is a snow macaque whose tribe is brutally massacred by an army of killers. Before the massacre, Monkey meets a hitman who has fled for his life to the mountains after receiving near-fatal injuries while doing wet work. Monkey watched this mysterious man, learning his craft and following in his footsteps after he was killed with the rest of Monkey’s tribe.

The ghost of this killer (named Bryce in the original Hulu TV series, Hit-Monkey) becomes mysteriously connected to Monkey, serving as a sort of twisted conscience while aiding Monkey in his quest for revenge. Along the way, Hit-Monkey develops a code and becomes known as the killer or killers, a legendary killer who defeats the worst of the worst. While he may not be the orthodox image of a deadly vigilante, in the Marvel universe Hit-Monkey is on a level where the Punisher, Deadpool and other brutal anti-heroes live.
WILL IT BE CANCELED LIKE MODOK?
The character was relatively unknown before the release of Hit-Monkey, adult animated television series set in the same universe as MODOC. The TV series is directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck and stars Fred Tatacciore. Although the series has not yet been officially canceled, a Variety report announcing MODOK’s cancellation stated that things do not look good for a potential Hit-Monkey.
Hit-Monkey may be the only TV series from Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb era to survive the Marvel Television/Marvel Studios merger, since everything else has been canceled, its renewal seems unlikely. That being said, when asked if he would return to voice Hit-Monkey for a second season or in the MCU at Momocon 2022, Fred Tatacciore expressed hope and more than a little desire.
FRED TATACIORE WOULD HE PROVIDE HIT-MONKEY IN SEASON 2 OR THE MCU
“When?!?! I was totally going to die. God, are you kidding me? I’d love that! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean, [monkey noises]that’s my real answer.’ – Fred Tatacciore, voice of Hit-Monkey
Although there are no official plans for a second season of Hit-Monkey, or for the character to appear in the MCU, there is so much potential for hilarious, heartfelt, explosive storytelling in both franchises. Additionally, Fred Tatacciore is a powerful actor with a long history of playing Marvel characters. Outside of Hit-Monkey, Tatasciore has voiced the Hulk, Beast, Thing and many other Marvel legends. What better way to honor that legacy than with a role in the MCU?

Regardless of where the character appears next, whether it’s inside Hit-Monkey Season 2, in the MCU, or another avenue entirely, would be a waste to keep Hit-Monkey confined to the comic book world. And since Disney holds the keys to Monkey’s IP, if they’re not using it, our beloved killer Monkey is effectively gathering dust on the shelf. Imagine how exciting it would be to watch Hit-Monkey go on a live-action adventure with Deadpool? Or the antics that are sure to ensue if he ever meets Rocket Raccoon and Groot? What about the continuing adventures of Monkey and Bryce and the looming threat of Lady Bullseye?
Although the fans don’t make these decisions, Hit-Monkey fanatics are passionate about more content, and so is Fred Tatacciore. When asked about his process in developing the character Hit-Monkey, the actor’s intense love for the role was palpable.
HIT-MONKEY: HOW FRED TATASCHIOR DEVELOPED THE MONKEY’S VOICE
“Hit-Monkey it was a great experience for me for several reasons. First, they were really trying to make a specific… the audition was kind of strict because they had us do a certain kind of monkey that existed there, but they also had to see if we could convey information with the most realistic monkey sounds.
So it was less of a cartoon [Fred Tatasciore doing monkey sounds]i should have done more [Tatasciore doing more realistic monkey sounds]and I had to listen to a lot of monkey noises to trigger that particular thing. We had callbacks, you know, it was a really interesting process!
Then, doing that, we just went and did all kinds of things that we could do to fill in… I could see the script and really, I would follow the animation. We will try to fill it as much as possible, give it as many emotions as possible.
And as you may or may not know, Hit-Monkey, it’s a very sad story for him. So I played it as serious as I could because that’s what they wanted, right? I didn’t get to play with Jason Sudeikis. Little did I know how funny this would be. I really didn’t. I mean, I knew the scene, I knew the story, but I didn’t really get all the ad libs, I didn’t get all the stuff.
Obviously I knew the premise, but I didn’t know how funny it was and how far it would go. Because I play the seriousness of it all, so I didn’t appreciate it until I saw it. It was like, “Oh my God, this is so hilarious!” so that was a big part of the process.
For me, I was trying to get some emotions that a monkey could realistically have. Yeah, there’s humor and stuff, but I tried to play it as dark and realistic as possible…which was an interesting thing without being too cartoonish.” – Fred Tatacciore, voice of Hit-Monkey
Fred Tatacciore has already brought this character to life for thousands of Marvel fans and he knocked it out of the park. If the character returns to the big or small screen in the future, it would be a waste to cast a new actor. Tatasciore is legendary in the voiceover world and he knows the ins and outs of what makes Monkey tick like no one else. Why redesign when you have everything you need for more amazing ones Hit-Monkey content already onboard and internal?
They say never meet your heroes, but in the case of Fred Tatacciore, the saying couldn’t be more wrong. The actor was one of the warmest souls I have ever met and his love of entertainment was nothing short of inspiring. Illuminerdi would like to thank Fred Tatacciore for his amazing role in Hit-Monkey season one and to thank Momocon for giving us the opportunity to interview this living Marvel legend.
