Leo found himself stranded on a secluded beach below the cliff, prompting the USCG to dispatch aircrew from Astoria. Local rescuers from Cannon Beach, Nehalem Bay, and Seaside were already on the scene, setting up to rappel down the cliffside when the USCG aircrew arrived.

Captured in a compelling video, the USCG rescue swimmer was lowered onto the beach with a hoisting basket from the helicopter. The rescuer approached the injured dog with precision, placed Leo into the basket, and both were safely lifted off the beach and into the helicopter.

Amid the intense operation, there was a lighthearted moment as the pilot humorously asked the rescuer if it was his first dog rescue. The rescuer confirmed, adding an extra layer of humanity to the rescue mission.

The helicopter landed in a parking lot around 4:15 p.m., where Leo was reunited with his owners, who awaited his return with a blanket. The owners expressed their joy and gratitude, hugging both their pet and the rescuer.

Positive Update on Leo’s Recovery

A day later, the USCG shared an update from Leo’s owner, reporting that the dog is expected to recover well after spending the night at an emergency vet. Despite a few cuts and bruises, Leo is in good spirits, leaving his owners immensely thankful for his survival.

Ecola State Park, located about 80 miles northwest of Portland along the Oregon coast, served as the backdrop for this successful collaboration between the USCG and local rescuers, ensuring Leo’s safe return to his loving family.
